Life and Work

In her interdisciplinary works, she creates narratives that examine power structures and human interactions. She uses a wide variety of materials and media to depict political, emotional, and spatial aspects of conditions. A holistic approach is a constant in Leclaire’s work. To this end, she not infrequently uses sound and music, allowing the viewer(s):in to become fully immersed in places, stories, and situations. However, the artist is not only concerned with the depicted interaction or the interaction between the work and the viewer, but collaborates again and again in the working process with other artists, thus creating an interaction between different working methods and perspectives. Aylin Leclaire likes to provoke and demonstrates humor while challenging actors and viewers, making them part of her works.

Leben und Arbeit

In ihren interdisziplinären Werken kreiert sie Narrative, die Machtstrukturen und menschliche Interaktionen untersuchen. Sie benutzt unterschiedlichste Materialien und Medien, um politische, emotionale und räumliche Aspekte von Zuständen darzustellen. Ein holistischer Ansatz ist eine Konstante in Leclaires Arbeiten. Dafür benutzt sie nicht selten Sound und Musik und lässt so den/die Betrachter:in vollends in Orte, Geschichten und Situationen eintauchen. Die Künstlerin beschäftigt sich jedoch nicht allein mit der dargestellten Interaktion oder der Interaktion zwischen Werk und Betrachter:in, sondern kollaboriert immer wieder im Arbeitsprozess mit anderen Künstler:innen und schafft so eine Interaktion zwischen unterschiedlichen Arbeitsweisen und Perspektiven. Aylin Leclaire mag es zu provozieren und beweist dabei Humor, während sie Akteur:innen und Betrachter:innen herausfordert und dabei zum Teil ihrer Werke macht.

The Spaceships of Ezekiel

The work „The Spaceships of Ezekiel“ plays with the interpretation of biblical excerpts that supposedly prove extraterrestrial life on earth and the childlike approach of building spaceships. The interlocking hoops pick up on the structure of Ezekiel’s description of aliens, angels, or spaceships. So do the four holographic faces located in the center of the sphere. The bright lights described in the Bible are also found here again. „As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces.This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced;“ In the work „The Spaceships of Ezekiel“ conspiracy theories mix with sci-fi technologies. Die Arbeit „The Spaceships of Ezekiel“ spielt mit der Interpretation von Bibelauszügen, die angeblich extraterrestrisches Leben auf der Erde beweisen und dem kindlichen Ansatz des Raumschiffbauens. Die ineinander liegenden Reifen greifen die Struktur von Ezekiels Beschreibung von Aliens, Engeln oder Spaceships auf. Ebenso die vier holografischen Gesichter, die sich in der Mitte der Kugel befinden. Auch die in der Bibel beschriebenen hellen Lichter sind hier wieder zu finden. „Als ich die Lebewesen betrachtete, sah ich auf dem Boden neben jedem Lebewesen ein Rad mit vier Gesichtern, so sahen die Räder aus und so waren sie aufgebaut: Sie funkelten wie Topas, und alle vier sahen gleich aus. Jedes schien wie ein Rad zu sein, das ein Rad schneidet. Wenn sie sich bewegten, gingen sie in eine der vier Richtungen, in die die Wesen blickten;“ In dem Werk „The Spaceships of Ezekiel“ vermischen sich Verschwörungstheorien mit Sci-Fi Technologien. Die Verspieltheit von Material und Verarbeitung mutet so „gebastelt“ an, wie die Theorien die das Werk beschreibt.

Aylin Leclaire (born 1992 in Duisburg) is a German-Turkish musician and interdisciplinary artist. Her music mixes dark pop electro sounds with folkloric and experimental elements. Her voice leads through emotion-soaked stories. In the album Sculptural Rituals, she describes the cycle of artistic creation in eight songs. In her interdisciplinary works, she creates narratives that explore power structures and human interactions. She uses a wide variety of materials and media to depict political, emotional, and spatial aspects of states. A holistic approach is a constant in Leclaire’s work. To this end, she not infrequently uses sound and music, allowing the viewer(s):in to become fully immersed in places, stories, and situations. However, the artist is not solely concerned with the interaction depicted or the interaction between the work and the viewer, but collaborates again and again with other artists in the working process, thus creating an interaction between different working methods and perspectives. Aylin Leclaire likes to provoke, demonstrating a sense of humor while challenging actors:in and viewers:in, making them part of her works. In 2019, Aylin Leclaire graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a master student of Martin Gostner. She also studied at the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam in the Master of Voice program. She currently lives and works in Düsseldorf.
